Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the long-term results of cementless total hip arthroplasty using Anatomic Locking Medullary (AML) hip prosthesis.

Materials and Methods: From February 1989 to February 1992, we reviewed the clinical and radiographic results of 34 patients (40 hips) who underwent cementless total hip replacement arthroplasty with AML prosthesis, and who were followed up for a minimum of 10 to 13 years.

Results: The mean preoperative Harris hip score of 52.4 point improved postoperatively to a mean of 88.3 points. Osteolysis had occurred in 8 hips (20.0%) around the stem and in 6 hips (15.0%) around the cup. Stress mediated bone resorption was found in 55.0% at 3-year follow up, 60.0% at 5year follow up, and 65.0% at 10-year follow up. One acetabular cup was revised for loosening and two hips were revised with polyethylene exchange for polyethylene wear.

Conclusion: The long term results of total hip arthroplasty using AML prosthesis were acceptable and proximal bone resorption was not progressed. However, polyethylene wear and osteolysis should be followed carefully over the long term.
